How to Create a Startup Budget

5 min read

Build an itemised startup budget that separates one-time spending from recurring commitments.

Itemise before you total

A budget made of category totals hides the decisions. Write the actual items with quantity and unit cost, so you can see what to cut and what to delay without guessing.

Tag every line as one-time or recurring

A recurring commitment is a much bigger decision than a one-time purchase of the same size, because it repeats every month whether revenue arrives or not. Reviewing the annualised recurring total is often what changes the plan.

Then pressure-test it

Ask what happens if revenue starts two months later than planned, and whether the recurring total is still survivable. If it is not, reduce fixed commitments before launch, not after.
